About us

Siyakhula Community Music Centre is a South African Non-Profit Organization that was established in 1986 when four youths from Umlazi Township approached a local professional musician, the late legendary musician Dr. Nhlanhla Brian Thusi for an opportunity of being taught Music Theory and Musical Instruments. This was the birth of the then Informal Music School which has grown and attracted enthusiastic youngsters from historically disadvantaged communities in and around the Durban Metropolitan Area (i.e. Umlazi, Chesterville, Clermont, Marianhill, Ntuzuma, Kwa-Mashu, Hammarsdale, kwaMakhutha and Umbumbulu.) Siyakhula Community Music Centre is managed by Mr. Khulekani Bhengu, a music graduate and musician par excellence in his own right. Khulekani has been involved with Siyakhula Music Centre from its birth, sharing the same dream for Siyakhula with the late Dr Brian Thusi.

From humble beginnings at the Thusi residence (R Section at Umlazi) the fledgling Siyakhula Community Music Centre moved to a bigger venue where it is still operating at The Salvation Army Church Hall on the corner of Sga Ngcobo and Ntonto Mkhize, F297 Umlazi Township.
